Cultural Perspectives in Astronomy

 

This lesson reviews how motion and position of celestial objects play a special role in
aboriginal culture and traditions. Students will also have the opportunity to explore various cultural

perspectives about astronomy and be involved in various activities that involve storytelling. 

Severe Weather Stories


This activity involves students watching and reading about severe weather events from around the world.

In group discussions they will examine the social, economic and environmental costs of severe weather. 

Each student will journal their reflections to the news and do a resarch report on a severe weather event.

Biology of Human Diseases


This unit covers the topic of human diseases in a biology 30S class. It consists of a series of activities on

human disease that culminates in the production of an online community where studnets can share their

stories.  The plan developed so that students can gain greater understanding of the impacts of disease.

Fun Fraction Folktale Fiesta Feast

 

This project is to finish the unit on fractions with a fun activity that incorporates using fractions in

everyday life. Each student will contribute a favourite family recipe and calculate the ration of yield to feed

the class. The class will compile a recipe book and share family stories about their favorite foods.

Collecting Family Stories Activity


Students will collect true family stories about the "old days" by interviewing older relatives. Students

will explore math by talking with family and looking at pricing in the past. Students will then

have a choice of writing and illustrating a picture book or practices storytelling for videotapping.

Why Bear Sleeps All Winter Long


This lesson starts with a story about a hibernating bear, students will study characteristics and needs of living things and the five senses.  This matterial is explored through drama, storytelling and word play. Studnets will also discus the idea of community and how friends can help us solve problems and supprot us in difficult times.
